The weeks are flying & this lovely bunch completed their final session with Belinda on Tuesday evening, learning all about the onset and stages of physiological labour, and how to put themselves at every advantage through it all... And that's a wrap for this lovely bunch! My April group finished their course on Sunday and are off to practice all the things they now know are going to put them at every advantage in their upcoming births 🙌🏼 I love sending people off feeling confident, informed and excited for what's ahead... It’s all getting very Christmassy here at Little Passengers HQ… And all our group courses have now come to an end for 2023! Just a small handful of 1-2-1’s including a caesarean workshop, 4th trimester workshop & a postnatal support session to go before we down tools for festivities with our families (in amongst our midwifery shifts of course!) 🌲🎅 What a year it’s been! Belinda & I have loved every minute, seeing all our wonderful clients go from nervous & anxious about birth to confident, informed & prepared for any eventuality…The only thing better is hearing all about their lovely birth experiences afterwards! Not to mention the consistent feedback that our course is the best money they spent during their pregnancy 🥰 On that note, for the first time in over 5 years of Little Passengers, the cost of our group courses is going up in January. Did you know you have a choice in where you go to have your baby? We are incredibly lucky here in Bristol & it’s surrounding areas to have two great hospital trusts that have a range of safe options for birthing your baby (plus more further afield). 👉Obstetric units, with all the medical personnel, drugs and theatres 👉Midwife-led units (both co-located at the main hospitals and free-standing) with their quieter, less medicalised environments set up for active births 👉Home! Set up any way you want it, with all your own home comforts! Most people have a perception that being close to all the doctors, theatres, etc will be their safest option – why wouldn’t they when every TV show/movie they’ve seen and horror story they’ve heard tells them that birth is risky?! 🤷‍♀️ And of course, choosing to be close to all those things is A-ok…you have to be where feels best for you. But it’s important to be informed and that includes knowing that for uncomplicated ‘low risk’ pregnancies statistically there is very little difference in outcomes for babies across any of the above locations! And serious adverse outcomes are incredibly rare. But there is a very significant increase in the rates of intervention (including episiotomy, assisted birth, caesarean) when birthing on the obstetric unit, despite little difference to the outcomes for babies. There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to making choices in your pregnancy, however information like this is so vital to know when thinking through your options and preferences. Well, 2023 is off to a tremendous start! It sounds so weird right?! Like you’re going to be ‘hypnotised’ & ‘out of it’ during labour…And how do you even learn that anyway? Are you going to have to sit in a dark room with other couples, chanting & listening to whale music?! That is NOT your thing…in fact you probably can’t think of anything worse! 😱 Me either! And if you think that’s what hypnobirthing is…then you need to take a closer look! 🧐🔎 Because actually the ‘hypno’ bit of hypnobirthing has two very simple, logical purposes: 👉Using positive reinforcement to reduce anxieties and build up your confidence in your capabilities. Just like hypnotherapy for fear of flying, or quitting a smoking habit…this side of hypnobirthing helps you break the cycle of negative thoughts that will hold you back and can prevent the flow of all the magical hormones needed to keep your labour on track. Adrenaline has a lot to answer for in many labours that require intervention, so learning how to keep it at bay is an essential that should be at the top of your birth planning to-do list!💯 👉Practising deep relaxation techniques to help you remain calm & keep your body relaxed during labour & birth. Relaxed muscles are able to do the things they were exactly designed to do much more smoothly & comfortably – being able to do this quickly & on demand is a total winner whether you’re running a marathon or giving birth to a baby! 🙌 So, there you have it! I can promise there’s no pendulum swinging, no being under anyone else’s control, no chanting or being made to do anything uncomfortable during our courses! There’s no weirdness included…just 100% evidence-based & enjoyable tools & techniques that will allow you to help rather than hinder the birth process.
